When the body knows: Interoceptive accuracy enhances physiological but not explicit differentiation between liars and truth-tellers

چکیده
Recent research suggests that people experience distinct physiological reactions to lies versus truths. It is unclear, however, if this incorporated into greater truth-lie judgment accuracy. We hypothesized individuals with high interoceptive accuracy—those access bodily experiences and stronger responses emotional stimuli—might be particularly likely accurately discriminate high-stakes, Participants (n = 71) completed two study sessions: the first assessed their accuracy heartbeat detection measures, second deception ability while measuring reactivity. Interoceptive was associated a difference in vasoconstriction liars (vs. truth-tellers), suggesting interoception positively sensitivity deception. accuracy, unrelated While better may enhance signals could from truths, it does not improve explicit

Getting into the Minds of Pairs of Liars and Truth Tellers: An Examination of Their Strategies
We examined the strategies used by 20 pairs of liars and 20 pairs of truth tellers when they were given the opportunity to prepare themselves for an interview in which they would be questioned about their whereabouts during a given period of time. More lying than truth telling pairs prepared themselves for the interviews. The truth tellers and liars who did prepare themselves used different ver...

THE EFFECT OF COGNITIVE LOAD ON LIARS AND TRUTH TELLERS: EXPLORING THE MODERATING IMPACT OF WORKING MEMORY CAPACITY by Sarah Jordan Adviser: Maria Hartwig Two studies are presented. The purpose of the first study is to examine the moderating impact of working memory capacity (WMC) on the cognitive load produced by both the type of statement a person is making and the manner in which the person ...
متن کاملDifferences in Word Usage by Truth Tellers and Liars in Written Statements and an Investigative Interview After a Mock Crime
Although much is known about word usage differences between truths and lies, most of the research to date involves an examination of truths and lies in low stakes situations, written statements or interviews but not both, and native speakers of a single language. We examined differences in word usage between truth tellers and liars in a moderately high stakes, real-life scenario (mock crime) in...
متن کاملInvestigating the relationship between interoceptive accuracy, interoceptive awareness, and emotional susceptibility
Interoception, the sense of the physiological condition of the body, provides a basis for subjective feelings and emotions. Anterior insular cortex activity represents the state of the body and varies according to personality traits, such as emotional susceptibility (ES)-the tendency to experience feelings of discomfort and vulnerability when facing emotionally-laden stimuli. The accuracy of pe...
متن کاملFunding Games: The Truth but Not the Whole Truth
We introduce the Funding Game, in which m identical resources are to be allocated among n selfish agents. Each agent requests a number of resources xi and reports a valuation ṽi(xi), which verifiably lower-bounds i’s true value for receiving xi items. The pairs (xi, ṽi(xi)) can be thought of as size-value pairs defining a knapsack problem with capacity m. A publicly-known algorithm is used to s...
